A parent's guide to managing ptosis in children — and our dedicated ARTView kids ptosis eyewear range, designed with children's safety and comfort at the forefront.
Discovering that your child has a drooping eyelid can be worrying. Ptosis in children most commonly occurs as congenital ptosis — present from birth because the eyelid's lifting mechanism did not fully develop.
It can affect one eye or both, and severity ranges from barely noticeable to significantly covering the pupil. For children, getting an early assessment from an eye care professional is important — particularly to monitor how the drooping may be affecting the child's developing vision.
Important for parents: All children with ptosis should be evaluated by a paediatric ophthalmologist. Ptosis glasses are a supportive aid and are not a substitute for medical evaluation. Early intervention is critical to prevent amblyopia in young children.
"For older children and teenagers — and for children where surgery has been delayed or is not yet indicated — ARTView kids ptosis glasses provide meaningful daily support for eyelid function and vision."
Our kids ptosis eyewear is not a scaled-down adult frame — it is designed from the ground up for children's facial proportions and safety requirements.
Unlike adult ARTView frames which use a fine metal wire crutch, our kids range uses a soft nylon crutch — completely safe, flexible and comfortable for children who are active and may be less careful with their glasses.
Standard adult frames sit incorrectly on children's smaller facial features. Our kids frames are sized and shaped for children — ensuring the crutch sits in the right position to gently support the eyelid as intended.
Many children with ptosis also have a refractive error — myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism — sometimes as a result of the ptosis itself affecting visual development. Our kids frames can be fitted with their prescription.
We recommend WhatsApp consultation before ordering children's ptosis glasses. Share your child's age, which eye is affected, severity of droop, and any prescription details. We'll guide you to the right solution.
There is no strict minimum age, but practically, ptosis glasses are most useful for children old enough to tolerate wearing spectacles consistently — typically from around 3–4 years and above. For very young infants with severe ptosis blocking the pupil, surgical intervention is usually recommended urgently to prevent amblyopia. Always follow your paediatric ophthalmologist's guidance.
If your child's ophthalmologist has recommended surgery — particularly for severe congenital ptosis or where there is a risk of amblyopia — please follow that advice. Surgery may be what the eye care professional recommends, especially for younger children. Ptosis glasses may be used as a temporary measure while awaiting surgery, or as a long-term solution in milder cases where surgery is not urgently indicated. Always discuss this decision with your child's specialist.
Yes. Our kids ptosis frames can be fitted with single vision prescription lenses. Share your child's prescription via WhatsApp and we'll advise on compatibility with the available frame and lens range.
Adult ARTView frames use a thin, adjustable metal wire crutch which can be precisely bent to any degree of droop. The kids range uses a softer nylon crutch which is safer for children — no sharp edges, more flexible if sat on or bent accidentally. The nylon crutch still provides effective eyelid support but is less precisely adjustable than the wire version.
